Massachusetts sets new sports betting revenue record in December

Adjusted gross sports betting revenue in Massachusetts reached an all-time high of $98.5 million in December, which also gave the state a new record for tax revenue from sports wagering.

Taxable gaming revenue was 3.8% above the prior record of $94.9 million set in November. It also surpassed December of the previous year by 71.3%, according to figures from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.

Of the total, $97.1 million came from online betting while the remaining $1.3 million was attributed to land-based sportsbook activity. Gross gaming revenue, prior to adjustments, also hit a new high of $102.5 million, the first time the total surpassed the $100 million mark.

As for player spending, monthly handle in the state was $845.3 million. This beat December 2024 by 7.2% but was 7.6% behind November’s record $914.7 million handle.

In terms of collective hold by the sportsbooks, the statewide figure for the month of December stood at 11.65%.

DraftKings still the dominant force in Massachusetts

Operator-wise, DraftKings retained a healthy lead in Massachusetts’ online sports betting market. It took $53.4 million in taxable gaming revenue from $447.5 million in bets, resulting in a hold of 11.93%.

FanDuel remained a distant second with $25.6 million off $202.2 million for a 12.66% hold. Fanatics took third with $8.3 million from $79.2 million, meaning a hold of 10.48%.

Elsewhere, BetMGM posted $5.5 million in revenue off a $50.4 million handle for a 10.91% monthly hold. Penn National’s theScore Bet, previously known as ESPN Bet, was next with $2.3 million from $24.1 million, leaving a 9.54% hold.

Caesars posted $1.6 million off $25.5 million for a hold of 6.27%, while Bally Bet completed the market with $397,137 from $4.6 million, resulting in an 8.6% hold.

As for land-based operators, Encore Boston Harbor took the most revenue at $654,688 for a hold of 11.42%. The remaining revenue was split across MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino.

Year-on-year casino decline

The state also published data for land-based gaming activity at the three commercial casinos. Gross gaming revenue was $97.9 million, down 4.5% year-on-year and also behind November 2025.

Slots revenue topped $69.5 million, while table games revenue amounted to $28.4 million. Encore Boston Harbor was the market leader with total revenue of $61.8 million, ahead of MGM Springfield at $21.9 million and Plainridge Park with $14.1 million.

Finishing with tax, the overall total for sports betting and casino gaming combined was $47.5 million. This included a record $19.6 million from sports betting and $27.9 million from the land-based casino gaming segment.
