Adjusted gross sports betting revenue in Virginia increased 80.6% year-on-year in December despite players wagering less during the month.
Revenue in December topped $79.3 million, the Virginia Lottery reported. This comfortably surpassed the monthly total in the previous year but fell 16.8% short of the record $95.3 million in November 2025.
Some $79.2 million of all revenue came from online betting, with retail’s share for the month just $115,064.
As for consumer spending, the state’s monthly handle reached $710.9 million. This was 2.6% less than December 2024 and 10.4% behind November 2025. The state’s handle record sits at $831.6 million from October 2025.
Online sports betting wagers amounted to $705.3 million. A further $5.7 million was bet at retail sportsbook locations across the state.
Sports betting tax revenue rises
The Virgina Lottery publishes limited data about monthly sports betting activity. It does not make public specific details about each of the 14 mobile operators and three casinos that are licensed to offer sports betting in Virginia.
Other key statistics from December included players receiving back a total of $627.5 million from sports betting.
The lottery reported $4.1 million in other, undisclosed deductions in December. However, no allowance bonuses or promotions were noted during the month.
Operators paid $11.9 million in tax, some 81% more than the same month in 2025. Of this, $11.6 million was designated a General Fund Allocation and $298,338 was a Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund Allocation.
